Golf Tournament Memories

Tor Hill Golf, Regina, SK

I started playing golf at the Murray Golf Course, a city of Regina public track, in 1984.  In 1985 the Saskatchewan Provincial Ladies Championsjip tournament was booked to play at our home course for three days in late July. I new that playing in the three day tournament was less costly than paying green fees for three days so I entered the tournament. I’m glad I did.  I played at Deer Park Municipal Golf Course, Yorkton in 1987, my first away from home competition with my friend June Hudyma.  It was a lot of fun as we and several gals from Regina were all staying at the same hotel so we had a practice round and meals and drinks together for four days.  I remember vividly how I was taught how to play a practice round by a gal from the Royal Regina Golf Course.

Other golf clubs hosting the Provincial Championship that we attended were:

1989 North Battleford Country Club

1990 Wascana Country Club, Regina

1996 Royal Regina Gol Course

I played in the City of Regina Ladies Championship yearly from starting golfing in 1984 until I moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1998.  June Hudyma and I represented Tor Hill on the city golf committee organizing this tournament for many years.  This was exciting times for women’s golf.  It was awesome to watch Joanne Goulet from the Royal Regina continue her dominance of winning the major trophy.
She won the city championship 32 times.

Joanne Goulet

We were proud to have one of our gals from Tor Hill, Pat Roger’s take the trophy from Joanne Goulet two years in a row 1991 and 1992.

I always enjoyed helping organize and playin in the city championship.  As the years went by my handicap came down and as luck would have it so did the junior girls from all over the city.  It was such fun to play with them as they were so free wheeling!  It was a joy to watch all players advance their skills.

The city of Regina opened a new executive golf course in 1990 and named it after Joanne.

This was a great tournament as it was played at two different city courses during my time golfing in Regina. I do remember winning this award at the city tournament’s .

I won the Marguerite Slack Award twice and received two Royal Doulton figurines.

My niece Deborah I iand I played in the “Golf” category of the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George Utah. Check out the post – Huntsman World Senior Games 2014 We had a wonderful time.

Just a note about this years senior games. It is a GREAT event with fantastic sport facilities, excellent food and well organized competitions. Try it, you’ll like it!

The Huntsman games are the largest annual multi-sport event in the world for athletes aged 50 and over. Our event, which includes over 30 different sports, has taken place for two weeks each October in St. George, Utah, USA for over 30 years. Over 11,500 athletes compete at the Huntsman World Senior Games. Try it, you may like it.

Last but not least was my playing in the Alberta Senior Ladies tournament in Priddis. Alberta. The post may be above but you can find it here -> 87 years old and celebrity status

I’ve golfed in many tournaments and have great memories. A Can-Am in Sun City AZ was lots of fun and the Hotels of Canmore for MADD with Murray McDonald and Guy Cartier was a “hoot and a holler”.
