Grass: green, green golf grass

I’m not an expert when it comes to grass and golf course management.  However, I want to tell you of my experiences of many golf courses and how GRASS relates to a your round of golf.

Signature hole at Deer Valley – count the palm trees

I will start with my recent round of golf at the Deer Valley Golf Course, at Sun City West, AZ.  and the extraordinary, immaculate condition of the GRASS at their course.

I could not believe my eyes, (to be more specific – my feet) when I walked from the club house to the practice green. The grass was perfectly cut, soft to my step, but not spongy.  Not a single weed was in sight as I walked some 20 yards to the green.  I was impressed. Onto the practice green and it was a true reflection of the care given to the grass I had walked on and in perfect condition. Two levels on the practice green and a smooth, fast surface everywhere.

The fairways and greens did not disappoint in any way.  What a treat to have grass that was acceptable to a small divot with your short irons!  I was confident that the greens would be in superb condition and I was not disappointed.  The greens were evenly mowed and fast but not too fast.  Perfect. Hats off to the maintenance crew.

I could hardly wait to get to the first tee and it, too,was a joy to behold. The tee box grass was perfectly cut and even the tee markers were pointed in the proper direction.

I have played almost 200 different golf courses and only twice have I experienced grass in such excelllent condition  as this course.  Both times were the day after a PGA Championship had been played!

Make sure you give thanks to the maintenance crew at a golf course where you find excellence. They will always appreciate it!

Good grass makes for good golf.
